Inventory your house
With a cross-country move just about a month away, I have taken on the task of inventorying our entire apartment. Mainly this is so that if something gets lost in the move, we know what it is and can better estimate its worth. This is a good idea for anyone though. If possible, you should supplement your inventory with pictures (NOT digital, those crappy 35mm throwaway cameras are best for this purpose, as is a camcorder) so that you can prove the functionality and condition of your items as well, because movers (for the military, at least) are responsible for the damage.
This is also a good idea for your home in the event of home invasion or fires and floods, though it's important to keep your inventory in a safe place and to keep it well-updated. The parents of a college roommate had a vacation home that was burned to the ground in a wildfire five years ago, and luckily they'd made a video tour of the home which they'd sent to an aunt halfway across the country. The video was immensely helpful later on when they had to file their insurance claim.

Here's a little hint I learned last time I moved and had over 50 DVDs and other items stolen:
After things are boxed and taped, take a permanent marker and make a prominent squiggly line across the entire taped portion. That way you can easily tell if it has been opened or tampered with.
They left the DVD cases and only removed the DVDs. It took me 2 weeks to find out, but by then they were gone!
I hope that doesn't happen to you!
Patrick- A friend of mine moved across town and the movers stole a handful of xBox games right out of the cases, like you describe. It's probably a good idea to tape shut each case with scotch tape and photograph that before the movers show up. They strongly advise against packing your own boxes, though you can label them any way you like once they have been packed.
Our only losses the last time we moved were a piece of furniture that got destroyed, a microwave, and the batteries to our remote control. This time we'll pack our remotes, and I know to be VERY suspicious and adamant if they're not packing something like they're supposed to. They actually never put the microwave on the pack list and my silly husband SIGNED it without the microwave on it. Argh. Live and learn, I guess.
Making an inventory of your house is a good idea! It's something that has been on my mind but of course it's easier said than done.
Nothing like a move to make you go through your things!
